The American Legion's United States Flag Code states: "when a flag has served its useful purpose, it should be destroyed, preferably by burning. For individual citizens, this should be done discreetly so that the act of destruction is not perceived as a protest or desecration."
The Flag Day celebration also will serve as the kickoff to the "Stars on the Square" historic flags walking tour. The display will give visitors a chance to celebrate the birthday of the Stars and Stripes by walking the square to see the evolution of the American flag.
