OAK CREEK, WI — The Oak Creek-Franklin Joint School District Board of Education approved rate increases for summer school staff during its meeting on Monday, according to a newsletter from the board.

The measure came up for discussion during the board's Jan. 24 meeting. The district attempts to hire educators from within OCFSD for the task of summer school courses, but there had been no raises to the $24-per-hour rate for a while, according to a report to the board prepared by Troy Hamblin, the district's director of human resources.

The increase could bring teacher rates up to $26-per-hour, while stipends for principals are raised from $3,200 to $3,500.

"Both increases will help keep OCFSD employees overseeing and teaching summer school," a report to the board said.

The total cost to raise summer school teachers' wages could be $16,600, and the principal stipend increase could cost $1200, according to the board report.

The move for summer school teachers comes as many school districts in Wisconsin are dealing with substitute teacher shortages, a Wisconsin Public Radio report said, causing some districts to scout out new ways to attract the staff.
