Vigils Planned in Oak Creek

At least two vigils are planned in Oak Creek early this week following the shootings at the Sikh Temple Sunday.

The Oak Creek Community United Methodist Church, 8675 S. 13th St., will hold a prayer vigil at 7:30 tonight (Monday). The service will include reflection, prayer and song followed by a candlelight vigil for peace and healing. All are welcome.

"I call us together for a time of prayer in support for our fellow brothers and sisters, especially those Sikh families who have lost loved ones," said Rev. Paul Armstrong, pastor of Oak Creek Community United Methodist Church. "We pray for the police officer and his family who first engaged the shooter and was wounded in so doing. Let us pray against the increasing violence seen in our communities. Let us pray and act for peace."

Oak Creek Mayor Steve Scaffidi said a vigil will also be held Tuesday night during National Night Out at the Oak Creek Community Center. A call has gone out on Facebook to have people wear blue and white in honor of the victims of the shooting.

National Night Out is being held as scheduled, but there will be no fireworks. The vigil will happen about 8:30 p.m., Scaffidi said.

Whitnall Park Lutheran Church will also be holding a service on August 8 at 7 p.m. at 5847 Lilac Lane in Hales Corners.
