Car insurance, like everything nowadays, is going up. There are many things that affect rates, but, currently we have 3 MAIN contributors driving rate increases: inflation, car theft increases, and reckless driving. I know - Seriously? - like we Americans need more reasons to worry about making ends meet.
#1 - Inflation is out of control
The inflation that is making life difficult for consumers is also impacting car insurance companies. Across the nation, auto insurers are filing new rate changes, nearly all are rate increases. Car insurance premiums will be increasing by at least 5% to 15% across the U.S..
But how does inflation figure into auto insurance costs?
It's because the cost of repairing insured vehicles after an accident is rising, according to industry experts. That includes the cost of components like bumpers, fenders and other common part casualties of most vehicle collisions and accidents. It seems counterintuitive but safety features are driving these costs the most. Back-up cameras and side-view sensors are built in to bumpers, mirrors, and windshields. A bumper that used to be $600 is now $3,600 and costs much more in labor to install.
Inflation is also effecting the cost of new vehicles, which are often needed in the case of total losses—and are seeing soaring prices lately. Some parts like IC chips are scarce or even unavailable causing huge spike in costs.
#2 - Car Thefts Soar
Right here, in the City of Milwaukee, we don't just have a problem with car theft (and reckless driving); it has become a crisis. As of this writing, 3,568 vehicles have been stolen so far this year—an average of more than 23 per day and nearly one every single hour. This shocking average has been the new normal since 2020, when a massive surge in crime enveloped Milwaukee and really all of Wisconsin. Every time a car gets stolen, insurers pay out to replace that car but YOU AND I pay the price with higher rates. These thefts lead into our 3rd reason for increases- often times stolen cars are later involved in serious accidents from reckless driving.

#3 -Reckless Driving
Car crashes are killing more and more people since the start of the pandemic — even though the volume of traffic hasn’t risen above pre-pandemic levels.
Deaths from car crashes in the first few months of this year hit the highest quarterly total since 2002, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced last week. Compared to the first quarter of 2019, the 2022 traffic deaths represent a 22% jump.
A 2020 survey from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that people engage in riskier behaviors than ever before, including reading text messages, speeding, running red lights on purpose, aggressively changing lanes, not wearing seat belts or driving after having consumed alcohol or cannabis. Anyone who drives sees this happen every single day.
Bottom Line
Insurance rates, like everything else, will continue to rise. Your very best defense is to SHOP AROUND. Find an independent agency that has several companies to choose from. This gives you the ability to get a company with lower rates without sacrificing coverages!!
