Five Years After ACT 10, Port Washington Teachers are Losing Money

They are not alone. According to our analysis, teachers in only 2 of 16 Patch communities in Wisconsin have avoided losing money as a group.

PORT WASHINGTON -- Five years after Act 10 was passed by the Republican-controlled State Legislature, Port Washington school teachers are losing money.

In a Special Report published by the Journal Sentinel earlier this month, they took a look at how ACT 10 affected school districts across the state after 5 years. At its core, Act 10 was designed to limit the collective bargaining power of teacher's unions and limiting base salary growth for teachers. For most districts, that's happening.

Over the last five years, the inflation rate in the U.S. is 6.41 percent according to Department of Labor statistics.

In the five years since the start of ACT 10, the average Port Washington school teacher's salary has decreased by 6.3%

A Patch analysis shows that, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, although the average Port Washington school teacher salary has decreased by $3,868.20, the average teacher has actually lost $8,652.64 in purchasing power when indexed with inflation.

Most Teachers are Losing Money

The teachers in your district are not alone. According to a Patch analysis, the only Patch.com communities where the average teacher salary has kept up has been in Hudson and Shorewood.

In those communities, competitive staffing decisions have driven faculty costs up. In the communities that have posted increases less than 6.41 percent, districts have theoretically captured some of the savings promised by ACT 10.
