Lockout Lifted After Man Taken Into Custody In Waukesha

The man was suffering a mental health episode and the Washington County Sheriff's Department had a felony warrant for his arrest.

WAUKESHA,WI—A man suffering from a mental health episode was safely taken into custody on Wednesday afternoon, according to a City of Waukesha Police news release. Police believed the man had a gun and several schools went into lockout mode out of caution.

At 9 a.m., the city's communications center received a phone call from a person concerned for a friend who was suffering from a mental health episode.

The caller wanted Waukesha Police to check on the wellbeing of a man in his 30’s.

Police said they didn't have much information about the man's location but there was "compelling information" that he had a gun. Police established a general area of concern on Madison Street west to the city limits and south to Sunset Drive.

As a precautionary measure, the Waukesha School District enacted a lockout protocol. Activities like recess and off-campus lunches are stopped during a lockout.

Police said the man was found around 1:45 p.m.

"Our primary focus is getting him the help he needs. The Washington County Sheriff’s Department has a felony warrant for this person’s arrest," the release said.

Joe Koch, Waukesha School District Deputy Superintendent, confirmed the following schools were on lockout on Wednesday: Waukesha North, Waukesha South, Waukesha West High School, Butler/Blair Campuses, Hawthorne, Lowell, Summit View and Stem Saratoga.
