A 33-year-old Milwaukee man is facing charges in the shooting, according to police.

Detective Lt. Shane Wrucke said police responded to the hotel around 10:33 p.m. The officers were directed to the second floor of the hotel where they were able to confirm that shots had been fired in a hallway.

They were checking rooms for anyone who would have been injured by that gunfire and while attempting contact at one of the rooms, they were met with gunfire from inside, Wrucke said.

"Officers returned fire. However, the suspect was not struck," he said.

Eventually, the gunman exited the room and was taken into custody.

Two firearms were recovered inside the hotel, Wrucke said.

Wrucke identified the man as Kenneth Burney, 33, of Milwaukee. Charges will be referred to the Milwaukee district attorney in the coming days, he said.

Mayor Dennis McBride expressed his gratitude to the police officers.

"This was a difficult situation, again, because of the courage and dedication of our police officers, when it could have been a very tragic situation was tamped down and the community was protected," McBride said.
