WAUWATOSA, WI — The District 3 seat on the Wauwatosa Common Council is empty after Nancy Welch resigned Monday, the city announced.

Welch resigned after her and her husband found a new home outside of the city, she told Patch in an email. "I cannot continue serving on the Common Council when I no longer reside in Wauwatosa."

Five members of the common council will form a nomination committee and ask district residents to apply, the city said. There will be a two-week window for residents to submit their applications.

The committee will interview applicants no later than two weeks after the application deadline closes, the city said. Interviews will be videotaped and made available to the public.

After the interview, the committee will pick an applicant to recommend to the Common Council for a vote, the city said. The applicant has to win by a majority vote, but the council isn't bound to take the nomination committee's recommendation.

The council won't vote to fill the vacancy for at least seven days after the nomination committee makes their pick, the city said. The delay is to make time for public comment and consideration by alderpersons who aren't members of the committee.
