Emergency Dispatcher Helps Deliver Baby In Wauwatosa

WAUWATOSA, WI—A 911 emergency dispatcher helped deliver a baby in Wauwatosa. Dispatcher Rhondi Love assisted a Wauwatosa family deliver a baby over the phone utilizing Emergency Medical Dispatch, according to the Wauwatosa Police Department.

EMD is a system that enhances emergency services and allows the call takers to quickly narrow down the type of situation and dispatch first responders.

The questions asked by the dispatcher help them relay critical information to responding medical personnel so they can be prepared to assist immediately when they arrive, police said.

Love has worked as a dispatcher in Wauwatosa for the past two and a half years. When she received that emergency call, she quickly realized there wasn’t time to wait for the paramedics to arrive, police said.

She coached the parents through the delivery of their daughter Aria.

“It was single handedly the most rewarding experience I’ve had so far in my career,” Love said in a statement.

This was the first dispatcher-assisted childbirth since the implementation of emergency medical dispatching.

Love was awarded a Stork Pin, a special commendation reserved specifically for dispatchers who assist in the delivery of a baby. She also got the chance to meet the baby she helped deliver, police said.

“Rhondi is a perfect example of the excellent service our dispatchers provide on every call,” said Captain Gary Gabrish. “We wish the family and Aria all the best.”
