Here’s Why Hazel Was Shouted Out As A Wauwatosa Star Student

We all know students who excel in academic, fine arts or volunteer service. Here's one local resident who is having an impact in Wauwatosa.

(T-Mobile; Patch)

WAUWATOSA, WI — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Kim Boettcher who nominated Hazel of Wauwatosa.

How do you know the star local student?

She is a student in my school.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Hazel is a kind, intelligent, and compassionate middle school student. Her calming nature allows her to help lead the school business, AP Inc., and assist students in making it successful. She works with her classmates by genuinely listening to their ideas and then providing in-depth answers to any questions they may have. On numerous occasions I have overheard students say, “Let’s ask Hazel. She can help!”

Additionally, her placement in the Algebra I math group at school–an accelerated math class- serves her beyond the classroom. In math class, she initiates powerful conversations around difficult concepts and is able to connect what students previously learned to help her math team figure out a new concept. Her math vocabulary is exceptional and her reasoning is very thorough. She is a CFO for the student-run business where she manages the budget, receipts, invoices and more. As part of this leadership team, Hazel plans the business meetings and speaks before her peers twice a week. Hazel is a quiet and able leader.

Hazel is open-minded and treats everyone with respect and kindness. She actively participates in the school’s GSA program. In fact, she was one of the first members of the school’s first GSA program. Hazel ensures that everyone feels accepted, and she even met with the school librarian to discuss how the school might have more inclusive LGBTQA+ materials on their shelves. She and a group of peers made posters to put around the school detailing what GSA is and showcasing the flags that represent GSA. Her peers know that Hazel will be non-judgemental in any situation and they can rely on her to be open and honest.

Hazel is often seen interacting with the younger students in school. Her warm nature attracts kids to her whether it’s to tell her a story or give her a hug as she passes by. Hazel is wise beyond her middle school years. She is a quiet, calming force and a treasure to everyone that knows her.

Hazel clearly has a compassionate heart which carefully considers others feelings. She is not afraid to respectfully disagree and state her mind with a balanced approach of understanding that there are two sides of an issue. She has always been a passionate, competent learner who seeks challenges and has an inner drive for deeper understanding. She is a young lady of action and wants to make a positive difference in the world by offering her calm insight and wisdom beyond her years. Hazel is a joy to know and an asset to anything she undertakes.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Hazel is a remarkable student. She embodies the words kind and compassionate and exhibits a positive outlook everywhere she goes.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Hazel!
