Volunteers Plant 140 Trees at County Grounds Park
75 volunteers planted trees in Sanctuary Woods, extending the park by two acres
In November, a group of volunteers made a visible impact in Wauwatosa's County Grounds Park by planting 140 trees and extending the existing Sanctuary Woods by two acres.
After a brief history lesson about the park, the history of the forest (some trees are more than 300 years old!), and the variety of animals that rely on it as a habitat, volunteers were instructed in proper planting techniques by Milwaukee County Parks employees. Among the volunteers were young people from BSA Troop 21 and Youth Friends of County Grounds Park.
White Oak, Chinkapin Oak, Burr Oak, American Basswood, Black Cherry, and Northern Hackberry trees - native species - were planted.

"Together we made a visible difference," said Jonathan Piel, President, Friends of County Grounds Park.
Additional planting events are being planned for 2023, when Sugar Maples and Shagbark Hickories may be planted.

The effort was made possible by generous donations from the Friends of County Grounds Park, Milwaukee Regional Medical Center, Ronald McDonald House Charities, the Watertown Apartments and private donors.
