Cheyenne Winter Storm Warning: Wind Chill Could Hit 25 Below Zero

CHEYENNE, WY — A major winter storm took aim at Cheyenne, Wyoming, on Wednesday morning and forecasters issued a winter storm warning for the region, which could see up to 7 inches of snow possible in some areas.

The National Weather Service said the warning remains in effect until 2 a.m. Thursday and predicted between 4 and 7 inches of snow could fall in all across the region. The latest forecast for Cheyenne called for about an inch of snow and frigid temperatures during the day, though the weather service's local office recorded 4 inches of snow by 8 a.m.

"Light #snow continues today w/ minimal additional accumulations expected. Otherwise, the main story is very #cold temperatures. Dangerous #windchills likely tonight and early Thursday," the weather service said around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Wednesday will see a high of just 10 degrees, with winds making it feel as low as 10 degrees below zero in the city. Temperatures were expected to plummet to 9 degrees below zero overnight, with a wind chill of about 25 degrees below zero.

Roads could become treacherous due to ice, snow and low visibility.

Areas affected by the storm warning include:

  • South Laramie Range and neighboring foothills
  • Central Laramie County, including Vedauwoo, Horse Creek, and Cheyenne

"If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency," the weather service statement said.

On Thursday, forecasters said Cheyenne residents could expect sunny weather, but more bone-chilling temperatures. Although the high was near 20 degrees, the wind chill values would make it feel between 10 and 20 degrees below zero.
