1 Dead, 5 Injured In Easter Sunday Shooting

A shooting Sunday at Patton Park left one person dead and five more victims injured.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — An Easter Sunday gathering at Patton Park turned deadly when a shots were fired, killing one person and injuring five more. A 32-year-old Bessemer woman, Areyelle Yarbrough, was pronounced dead on the scene.

Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department said the incident occurred just after 7 p.m. Sunday, where a large group of people were gathered at Patton Park at 1200 Sipsy Street. Mauldin said the wounded victims include one adult and four juveniles ranging in age from 5 years old to 17.

Mauldin said the shooting stemmed from an altercation between two groups of men, which escalated to an exchange of gunfire in the crowded park.

“Evidence collected indicates over 30 rounds were fired,” Mauldin said. “Detectives have obtained witness accounts; however additional witnesses are encouraged to come forward.”

Mauldin added that no arrests have been made, and police believe multiple shooters were involved in this incident.

Radio talk show host Rickey Smiley is offering a $5,000 reward for the capture of the shooter responsible for Yarbrough's death.
