Birmingham Apartment Fire Death Ruled A Homicide: Police

A person found dead after an apartment fire in east Birmingham Thursday had gunshot wounds, according to Birmingham police.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A person found dead after an apartment fire in east Birmingham Thursday was the victim of a homicide, police say. Birmingham Fire and Rescue reported finding a body upon a search of the complex in the 100 block of Weststation Place.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald of the Birmingham Police department said the fire was called in just before 10 p.m. The victim was found near a doorway in the complex and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Truman said an autopsy showed the victim died from a gunshot would, and a homicide investigation is underway. Police have no suspects.

The victim's identity will be released upon notification of next of kin.
