Proposed regulations could ban short-term rentals in single-family neighborhoods, cap them elsewhere at 1% of units, add spacing, permitting and noise rules, and aim to address crime, nuisance complaints and housing affordability.

2. New neighborhood begins at North Roebuck YMCA with Habitat homes (al.com) — Families are settling into the first three Habitat for Humanity homes at Birmingham’s North Roebuck YMCA campus, launching a 22‑home neighborhood tied to major campus redevelopment. YMCA of Greater Birmingham leaders say the project aims to tackle health, housing, early learning, and nutrition inequities while reshaping the Northeast YMCA’s eight‑acre site.

3. Birmingham police chief cites drop in homicides, prioritizes domestic violence in new year (wbrc.com) — Birmingham’s police chief says homicides and other violent crimes are down, but he’s shifting more attention to rising domestic violence cases across the city. He plans closer partnerships with prosecutors and family court while keeping pressure on organized crime, stressing that any loss of life is unacceptable and that community involvement is critical to lasting change.

4. Jimmie Hale Mission asks for donations ahead of 2026 (cbs42.com) — Birmingham’s Jimmie Hale Mission is keeping its warming station open through New Year’s Eve and urgently asking for donations as cold weather and 2026 approach. Staff say both monetary and material gifts help people move from emergency shelter into long‑term stability, and remind residents that their services run 365 days a year.

5. Birmingham gas prices drop, now 21.3 cents lower than last year (abc3340.com) — Birmingham drivers are seeing some relief at the pump, with average gas prices down to about $2.49 per gallon—more than 21 cents cheaper than this time last year.
