Here are the top 3 stories in Birmingham today:
- Yesterday, Wells Fargo revealed a new mural in downtown Birmingham to honor the anniversary of the Freedom Rides. The mural is an ode to the Freedom Riders, non-violent protesters in downtown Birmingham during the Civil Rights movement. Former Freedom Rider Catherine Burks-Brooks was present along with other community leaders and Wells Fargo at the mural's reveal, at what is now Wells Fargo’s Motor Tower branch. At the site of the mural, there is also a QR code that visitors can scan, providing an educational video about the Freedom Rides and their significance. (Bham Now)
- Today, in celebration of Cinco de Mayo, The Live HealthSmart Alabama Mobile Market, will be stopping at Railroad Park. From 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the Mobile Market will feature healthy food for anyone visiting the park. There will even be a cooking demonstration done by a local chef on how to make healthy veggie tacos with ingredients you can buy right from the market. Besides encouraging people to eat healthily, the market also has a mission of affordability and tries to remain accessible to everyone financially. Busy that day? Don't worry! The market will also be at Railroad Park at the same time on May 19, Jun. 2, and Jun. 16. (University of Alabama at Birmingham)
- A Birmingham man has been identified by Trussville Police as a car chase suspect. 46-year-old Birmingham resident, John Henry Lewis, has been charged with first-degree receiving stolen property bond of $30,000 and attempting to elude bond of $3,500. Due to Lewis's other outstanding warrants associated with several other local agencies, he has been transferred to the Jefferson County Jail. (Trussvilletribune)
