Local Philanthropist, Activist Enters Birmingham Mayor's Race
Cerissa Brown, a local mental health advocate and entrepreneur, has declared her candidacy for Birmingham mayor.
BIRMINGHAM, AL — Another candidate has entered the Birmingham mayoral race, as local activist and entrepreneur Cerissa A. Brown recently joined a field that includes incumbent Randall Woodfin, former mayor William Bell, Jefferson County Commissioner LaShunda Scales and local businessman Chris Woods.
Brown is, thus far, the only candidate in the race who has never run for public office.
"I am ready to roll up my sleeves and fight for all 99 neighborhoods in Birmingham," Brown said in her official announcement Feb. 13. "I look at all of us as a team, and together we can work to make our city beautiful and safe."

Brown, a graduate of Vestavia Hills High School, has been a vocal advocate for mental health and has spearheaded efforts citywide to bring awareness to the issue.
The mayoral election is set for Aug. 24.
