Man Shot To Death At East Birmingham Car Wash

Police are investigating a homicide that occurred at a car was in east Birmingham Thursday.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A man was shot and killed in east Birmingham Thursday night outside a local car wash. The incident occurred just after 5 p.m. at the corner of 1st Avenue and Parkway East.

The preliminary investigation indicates that 27-year-old Detraio Whorton exited his vehicle and engaged in an altercation with another person, which escalated to gunfire, according to Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department. Whorton was shot and returned to his vehicle and collapsed in the driver seat.

Mauldin said Whorton was taken to UAB Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

No motive has been established in the homicide and no suspects are in custody. This is the 16th homicide investigation for the Birmingham Police Department this year.
