Here are the top three stories in Birmingham today:
- The City of Birmingham has approved millions of dollars in additional funds for its emergency rental assistance program to assist those needing help making rent and utility payments. The Birmingham City Council approved the allocation of $6.6 million for the ERA with the majority of that money being used to fulfill outstanding approved applications. More than 2,000 people living in Birmingham received money from the ERA last year. First-time applications will be accepted from Jun. 13 through Jul. 29. (WBRC)
- A new exhibition at the University of Alabama at Birmingham will exclusively showcase works by artists who were either born or are currently living in Alabama. The 2022 Alabama Triennial exhibit, running from Jun. 10 through Aug. 12, is being curated by UAB’s Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts. The triennial will fill all AEIVA’s exhibition spaces; an opening reception, free and open to the public, will be at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jun. 10 in AEIVA. (University of Alabama at Birmingham)
- The Birmingham Housing Authority’s Southtown Court is rebuilding, but they are looking to bring in more than just homes. It’s been six months since demolition began and they have demolished 29 of the 43 housing buildings in Birmingham’s Southtown Court. It is all in an effort to revamp the area and turn it into housing and shopping. Once complete, construction is slated to begin on 203 new units specifically for seniors and families. (WBRC)
