- According to the city of Birmingham, parking will be limited throughout the month of May due to an ongoing project. Lane striping will begin today as part of the new Birmingham Xpress Bus Rapid Transit System. On-street parking will be prohibited in the UAB Medical District along 5th Avenue South and 18th Street North and South. (WBRC)
- The author of In the Name of Emmett Till will be speaking at the Birmingham Public Library today, May 2, in the Arrington Auditorium from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Dr. Robert Mayer's book explains how the shooting of Emmett Till sparked young social justice activists into action. Though the book is intended for a younger audience, Dr. Mayer hopes that adults will be equally interested in the topic. (AL.com)
- An 11-year-old Birmingham boy organized a volunteer event for fellow classmates and community members to help the homeless. Ethan Hill coordinated a meeting at Essential Art Finesse studio in Birmingham on Saturday to create wellness check kits for the homeless and posters to hang up in shelters. This is one of many service projects that Hill has organized, including starting a non-profit Ethan's Heart at the age of six. (Alabama's News Leader)
