Hueytown man sentenced to more than 26 years in federal prison on drug and gun charges (abc3340.com) — Birmingham police surveillance in Ensley led to the arrest of a Hueytown man who has now been sentenced to more than 26 years in federal prison on major drug and gun charges. Officers recovered methamphetamine, fentanyl, marijuana, cash, and a firearm, and authorities note he was already on federal supervised release for prior drug convictions.
   

2. Jimmie Hale Mission reopening warming station Jan. 11-12 (cbs42.com) — Birmingham residents facing freezing temperatures can access an overnight warming station at Jimmie Hale Mission on Sunday and Monday nights, with free meals included. Doors open at 6 p.m., with shuttles from Linn Park and access via the Metro orange line to Sloss Furnaces, plus return transportation each morning.
   

3. UAB working to expand access to pre-hospital blood transfusions (wbrc.com) — UAB in Birmingham is leading a new effort to expand access to life‑saving pre-hospital blood transfusions across eight Alabama counties, especially for rural crash victims. Backed by a federal NHTSA grant, doctors will map where blood is most needed and design a system so more ambulances can carry and administer blood before patients ever reach the ER.
   

4. Samford's Lennie Acuff, family feeling at home with the Bulldogs (wbrc.com) — Samford men’s basketball coach Lennie Acuff and his family are now fully rooted in Birmingham, with his son Will serving as an assistant coach on staff. The longtime college coach says this late-career chapter feels special as four generations cheer from the stands and he focuses on relationships, leadership, and building on Samford’s recent success.
   

5. Sat, Jan 10 (nhgazette.com) — One entry in this historical day-by-day timeline recalls the 1957 bombings of four Black churches and two Black leaders’ homes in Birmingham placing that trauma alongside other major world and U.S. events.
