Historic Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham damaged by graffiti: ‘It wasn't OK' (al.com) — Sloss Furnaces in Birmingham is facing thousands of dollars in cleanup costs after someone tagged graffiti on a nearly 100-year-old Power House building this week. Museum staff say the damage breaks a long-standing trust with local graffiti artists and could further harm the fragile historic structure during removal.
   

2. Staying safe while using rideshares (wbrc.com) — Birmingham riders using Uber and other services on busy nights like New Year’s Eve are being urged to double-check drivers and stay alert before getting into any car. A local safety advocate who drives for Uber says many college students and young women skip basic checks, making them vulnerable to impostor drivers posing as rideshares.
   

3. Tuskegee University police chief arrested New Year's Day on DUI charge in Georgia (al.com) — A Tuskegee University police chief with prior service in Birmingham law enforcement has been placed on administrative leave after a New Year’s Day DUI arrest in Georgia. University officials say they’ll conduct an internal investigation while emphasizing their commitment to the rule of law, and note his earlier roles with Birmingham Police and Jefferson County agencies.
   

4. App State football ends season in JLab Birmingham Bowl (theappalachianonline.com) — Birmingham’s Protective Stadium hosted the JLab Birmingham Bowl, where Appalachian State closed its season with a 29–10 loss to Georgia Southern. The game featured multiple quarterback changes, costly turnovers, and a dominant rushing performance from Georgia Southern that sealed App State’s 5–8 finish.
