Here are the top three stories in Birmingham today:
- Birmingham expectant mothers should take advantage of a free program that supports women through all stages of pregnancy. Baby Yourself, by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, pairs expectant mothers with a dedicated nurse who is ready to go above and beyond a routine doctor’s visit — offering help from prenatal nutrition and education, all the way through labor, delivery, and postpartum check-ins. The program is available for BCBS Alabama members who are expecting a child, whether it’s their first or not. (Bham Now)
- A Birmingham man in recovery is urging people to carry Narcan with them. Narcan, or Naloxone as prescription medicine, reverses an opioid overdose; it cannot be used to get high and it is not addictive, according to The Jefferson County Department of Health (JCDH). Kyle Berman is encouraging people to carry the life-saving medicine, stating, "You’re more likely to save a life with Narcan than with anything else.” (WBRC)
- A Birmingham man has been charged in a shooting at the Dollar General warehouse in Bessemer. According to officials, the shooting occurred on Tuesday between two employees at the Dollar General warehouse on Lakeshore Parkway at 8:55 p.m. The suspected shooter, 48-year-old Stacy Terrell Kidd, of Birmingham, is charged with attempted murder and certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm.
