Suspected Street Racer Leaves Scene Of Fatal Wreck, Arrest Made

A woman died in a crash on Arkadelphia Road Sunday morning, which witnesses say involved street racing.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A 52-year-old woman is dead after a wreck on Arkadelphia Road Sunday, an incident police say involved street racing. The incident occurred around 6 a.m.

Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department said the wreck involved four vehicles.

"The preliminary investigation suggests witnesses observed vehicles racing prior to the accident," Mauldin said. "It was determined one of the drivers who was reportedly racing left the scene of the accident."

Mauldin said the person who was pronounced dead on the scene, identified as Brandy Lee Moore Ballard of Birmingham, was a passing motorist and not affiliated with racing when her vehicle was struck. One of the drivers, identified as 22-year-old Carmesia Flannigan, left the scene and was later taken into custody, Mauldin added.

Flannigan has been charged with murder, possession of a controlled substance and leaving the scene of an accident.
