Here are the top three stories today in Hoover:
- Hoover City Schools has broke ground on a $15.4 million performing arts center. The new center will be replacing Hoover High School's current theatre. The new center will be able to seat 940 individuals – a significant increase over the current theatre's 270-person capacity. The new center will connect to the school's band room through a connecting hallway. The center is being constructed by Blalock Building Company. (Construction Review Online)
- Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Tyson is determined to plead her case for opening the Jefferson County Courthouse for Saturday absentee voting. The County Commission voted against the proposal on Tuesday along party lines but Tyson continued to pursue the initiative during Thursday's meeting. According to Tyson, the courthouse belongs to taxpayers and not elected officials. (BirminghamTimes.com)
- Jefferson County residents will see their sewer bills increase by 3.49 percent next year. The bills will increase each year until the county has eliminated its debts. The increases were part of the county's 2013 bankruptcy agreement with U.S. Bankruptcy Clerk Scott Ford. At the time, it was the largest municipal bankruptcy in the country. (Subscription: AL.com)
