HOOVER, AL — Hoover police have arrested an accused sex offender for the second time in less than a year. Michael John Carter, 72, who was arrested in February on multiple sex offenses, was arrested again this week on additional charges.

Police say Carter, who was accused of sex acts against a relative and possessing approximately 377 images of child pornography, had been released on bond and was again using the internet to solicit child pornography.

"In November 2021, the Special Victims Unit received information that Carter, who was out of jail on bond awaiting trial in the initial case, was again using the internet to solicit child pornography," Sgt. Daniel Lowe of the Hoover Police Department said Thursday. "Detectives executed a search warrant at a motel on State Farm Parkway in Homewood where Carter was staying and took him into custody."

Lowe said investigators discovered multiple images of suspected child pornography on electronic devices in Carter’s possession. He has been charged with possession of obscene matter and possession with intent to disseminate obscene matter.

Carter is currently in custody at the Hoover City Jail and will be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail Thursday. The case remains under investigation and there is a possibility of additional charges, Lowe said.
