- Hoover City Schools canceled an appearance from award-winning author Derrick Barnes who was scheduled to visit three of the district's elementary schools. The author of "Crown," "I Am Every Good Thing," and "King of Kindergarten" was scheduled to speak for Black History Month in February. The email canceling Barnes' scheduled appearances reportedly came after a parent complained about his "controversial ideas." (AL.com)
- Four Illinois men have been arrested for the Jan. 25 break-in at Belk at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover. The suspects, Patrick Dudley, Monro Shivers, Alexis Trader, and Fontain Plummer, allegedly stole over $34,000 in high-end purses and handbags. They are in custody at a Kentucky jail and are facing charges of third-degree burglary and first-degree theft. (WBRC)
