- Hoover is considering creating an ordinance with restrictions on short-term rentals, including Airbnb. The regulation would only permit short-term rentals in apartments, condos, and commercial areas. Any businesses operating outside this permission would be shut down – primarily due to their lack of tax payment as business owners in the city. The Council will take a second read-through of the ordinance on Feb. 6 along with the public and then take a vote. (Alabama's News Leader)
- The Hoover Public Library is planning its second Kindness Summit to connect community volunteers with nonprofits. The Summit will take place on Feb. 17 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the theater level of the library, and attendees will visit nonprofits at their tables to learn more about how they can get involved. Since December, seven nonprofits committed to being part of the Summit, including the Literacy Council of Central Alabama, Salvation Army, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, Greater Birmingham Humane Society, Special Equestrians, and Kitty Kat Haven & Rescue. - New Hoover Rep. Mike Shaw seeks to consider the unintended consequences of legislation at the state level. Two of the upcoming issues that Shaw is approaching carefully are the expected tax rebate legislation and school choice. Shaw seeks to help people with tax relief and to help maintain school systems currently working well. He has established relationships with fellow legislators to "be part of a team and get to work."
