  1. New restaurants and stores are opening in Birmingham, which is just a short drive from Hoover to hit the shops and grab a bite to eat! One of the new shops, KS Boutique, sells stylish, high-quality women's clothing from sizes small to 3XL, and it's open Monday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Another new inclusion is Krystal, well-known for its thin hamburgers; its new prototype is designed for ready-to-go orders, has a double-land pickup and walk-up window, and has no dining room. (Bham Now)
  2. The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) shared preventive tips to stay out of the emergency room at hospitals due to limited space and increased wait times. Tips include getting an annual check-up, not skipping health screenings, staying up to date with vaccinations, staying hydrated, watching what you drink, and prioritizing self-care. UAB advises people to take advantage of other resources available for non-emergent situations, such as urgent care, UAB eMedicine, or scheduled clinic tele-visits. (India Education Diary)
  3. Biden announced a major disaster declaration for Alabama and ordered federal aid for state, tribal, and local recovery efforts on Jan. 12. Birmingham and Hoover sent 24 public works employees to assist with storm cleanup on Jan. 14, and 10 Hoover employees traveled to Selma with generators, tents, a boom truck, cots, and skid steer loaders. Further upcoming damage assessments will determine if assistance will be granted for additional areas in Alabama following the storms. (Birmingham Times)
