Shelby County Woman Accused Of Theft From Nursing Home Residents

A Shelby County woman who was employed at a local nursing home is accused of stealing from the facility's residents.

SHELBY COUNTY, AL — Attorney General Steve Marshall announced Tuesday the arrest of an Alabaster woman accused of stealing from residents of a Shelby County nursing home while she was employed as the facility’s business office manager.

Paige Taylor Smith, 57, is charged with two counts of theft of property first degree, a class B felony.

Alabama's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit investigated the case after the facility reported the theft to the Alabama Department of Public Health. The charges against Smith allege that she initiated unauthorized electronic withdrawals pf more than $2,500 from the victims’ checking accounts to pay the lease on her personal residence.

In addition, Smith is alleged to have used the victims’ debit cards for unauthorized ATM cash withdrawals of more than $2,500.

Smith surrendered to the Shelby County Detention Center where she is being held on bonds totaling $60,000.
