Here are the top stories today in Phoenix:
- Multiple Phoenix-area animal shelters are offering free or reduced adoption fees this holiday season as part of the Bissell Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters Holiday Hope event. The deals are part of an effort to ensure as many animals as possible are in a comfortable and loving home for the holidays, instead of in shelters. (KTAR.com)
- The median market price for a home in the Phoenix metro area has almost doubled in the past five years. The median price is $405,000 today, compared to $215,000 five years ago. Prices in ritzy Scottsdale and Paradise Valley are up 20 percent and 34 percent, respectively, since this time last year. Those in the market for luxury homes are on the lookout in the Valley since they can still buy here for much less than in metro areas on the east or west coast. (AZ Big Media)
- Workers from the Arizona Humane Society, along with some Phoenix firefighters, rescued a 6-week-old kitten from a storm drain where he'd been stuck for more than a week. The kitten will go to a foster home to gain some weight, get rid of his fleas and to recover from a stomach condition. After that, one of the firefighters who helped rescue him is considering adopting him. (Phoenix Patch)
- A new study predicts that the rising heat in Phoenix will cost hundreds of lives and billions of dollars by 2050, if the city doesn't adopt cooling measures like widespread tree planting and cool roof installation. Increased heat, without mitigation efforts, is also expected to decrease local economic output and to increase consumer electric bills. (AZCentral.com)
