📰 News we're reading

1. Keep pets safe during New Year's events (northcentralnews.net) — As New Year’s fireworks approach, Phoenix pet owners are urged to secure their animals with current ID tags and microchips, keep them indoors, and mask loud noises with TV or radio. The Arizona Humane Society also asks residents to report animals in distress to its Phoenix-based emergency line so shelters can focus space on sick and injured pets.

2. Arizona DPS urges drivers to slow down after 2 excessive speeding arrests (azfamily.com) — State troopers are warning Phoenix-area drivers to slow down after two recent arrests where cars were clocked at 118 and 143 mph, including one trooper returning to the Phoenix area from Kingman. Both drivers were jailed for reckless driving and had their vehicles impounded for 20 days. DPS is urging Valley motorists to prioritize safety and obey speed limits.

3. Top Arizona news stories from Dec. 19-21 (ktar.com) — Phoenix residents can expect more travel options soon, with American Airlines adding six new routes from Phoenix Sky Harbor in 2026 and Fazoli’s expanding its presence across the Valley. The statewide news roundup also covers Gov. Katie Hobbs’ comments on the 2026 governor’s race, a false active-shooter report at Luke Air Force Base, and major renovations planned for downtown Chandler’s Dr. A.J. Chandler Park.

4. Early holiday travel at Phoenix Sky Harbor smoother than expected (azfamily.com) — If you’re flying through Phoenix Sky Harbor for Christmas, early travelers say crowds and lines have been surprisingly manageable so far. AAA still expects record-breaking national air travel, with the heaviest rush likely closer to December 23 and returns around New Year’s Day, so locals may want to plan flights to avoid those peak days.
