PHOENIX, AZ —Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Tuesday launched a new "virtual queuing" program that allows passengers to schedule a specific time to get in the TSA Security Checkpoint line.

PHX Reserve is a free and optional service and initially is being offered as a pilot program in Terminal 3.

Passengers leaving from that terminal now can make security-line reservations up to three days before a flight, and they will use a dedicated entry point to the security line, according to airport.

Security check-in times can be reserved online and be made for between 60 minutes and four hours before a passenger's flight.

The dedicated PHX Reserve Security entry point will be available between 4 a.m. and 3 p.m. every day, and passengers traveling as a group —of up to 10 —can reserve an appointment together, according to the airport.

Phoenix Sky Harbor has created the program alongside partners Copenhagen Optimization, a leading provider of software and consultancy focused on airports' operational planning, and Clear, a company that creates identity verification technologies.

"Virtual Queuing is a key step towards the smart and digitalized airport, where we leverage data to create new opportunities for passengers, airlines and airports," said Kasper Hounsgaard, CEO of Copenhagen Optimization. "Together with Sky Harbor, we enable a more efficient operation and provide the foundation for the seamless passenger journey."
