Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:
- Yesterday Phoenix police honored the life of officer William (Haze) Burch on the anniversary of being the first officer killed in the line of duty. On Feb. 5, 1925, Burch was on patrol when he noticed two men trying to siphon gas from a nearby car. Burch attempted to stop the men before being shot; the two men were eventually arrested and charged with the murder of Burch and other crimes committed. Officer Burch's final wish to his police chief was for his family to be taken care of; Burch was survived by his wife and three young children. (12news.com KPNX)
- Early Saturday morning, Phoenix police responded to a call about a shooting near 1500 West Taylor Street, resulting in one death and two injured. Around 1:30 a.m., officers arrived at the crime scene to find three men suffering from gunshot wounds; two were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while Manuel Reyes was pronounced dead at the hospital. It is believed that a confrontation outside of a home resulted in shots being fired. Police are still investigating what caused the incident as well as the whereabouts of the shooters. - With the Super Bowl this weekend in Phoenix, plan travel this coming weekend and throughout this entire week. With the Super Bowl here at State Farm Stadium, heavier traffic flows can be expected in downtown Phoenix as well as other routes in the area. All construction-related road closures are expected to be closed throughout Feb. 15 to improve traffic flow for football-related events and regular commutes. It is strongly encouraged to utilize the public transportation additions and ride-share services to lessen the number of cars on the road and parking with limited space. (AZ Big Media)
