Power Outage Causes Delays At Phoenix Airport: 1 Worker Injured

PHOENIX, AZ — A power outage at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport Monday morning caused significant delays and cancellations and the equipment failure that caused the outage injured one power company worker, according to a statement from Arizona Public Service.

The power company worker was taken to an area hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, the power company said.

Dozens of flights on American and Southwest Airlines in and out of Phoenix were delayed, cancelled or diverted Monday morning.

As of around 11:45 a.m. Monday, American and Southwest Airlines began releasing flights for departure and arrival, and some diverted flights were being rerouted to Phoenix, Sky Harbor said in a statement.

The airport lost power in Terminals 3 and 4 around 8 a.m. Monday. Power was restored in Terminal 3 around 9 a.m., but Arizona Public Service is still working to restore power in Terminal 4. The company tweeted that it did not expect to fully restore power until around 2:30 p.m. Monday. Terminal 4 is the busiest terminal at Sky Harbor.

The outage is causing "significant impact" to flights out of Sky Harbor for Southwest and American Airlines.

The airport recommends that travelers check their flight status before heading to the airport.

The outage occurred when a piece of equipment failed as an Arizona Public Service crew performed routine maintenance Monday morning, according to the APS statement.
