Here are the top stories today in Phoenix:
- ASU's downtown Phoenix campus saw a significant decrease in its crime rate and arrests in 2020. The number of dating violence and rape cases dropped by 50 percent. The police attribute the downtick to early reporting, cooperation from victims and the use of technology like the LiveSafe app. (AZ Big Media)
- The Phoenix Pride parade and festival are back this weekend after being canceled in 2020 and postponed earlier this year. See our guide to both events for need-to-know info before you don your rainbow gear and head out to celebrate. (Phoenix Patch)
- A man is facing charges on suspicion of indecent exposure and disorderly conduct after he's accused of exposing himself to elementary students leaving school and chasing after some of them, including a group of girls. (Arizona's Family)
- Citations for street racing in Phoenix have increased dramatically since the start of the pandemic. Police said the increase is at least partially fueled by posts on social media. Phoenix police now have a dedicated Drag Racing Task Force to help deal with the problem. (AZCentral.com)
- Arizona Humane Society broke ground Thursday on its new $46 million Phoenix campus. The new campus will have two stories and 72,000 square feet of space. It is being constructed near the juncture of Loop 202 and State Route 143 in Papago Park Buttes. The new campus is set to open in 2023, replacing the 64-year-old Sunnyslope campus. (KTAR.com)
