The proposed five year plan puts $571 million toward projects that widen highways or improve interchanges, including:
- Widening Interstate 17 north of Phoenix from Anthem Way to Sunset Point. The plan puts $83.6 toward the project this year, cost of $469 million.
- Widening the Gila River bridges between Phoenix and Casa Grande. Construction on the $83 million project is set to begin next year and is an important step in the department of transportation's goal of widening I-10 to three lanes in each direction between Phoenix and Tucson.
The tentative plan also puts more than $2.5 billion toward pavement preservation projects across Arizona over the next five years to upgrade 400 "lane miles" of pavement from their current fair and poor condition to good condition. A lane mile is a mile of roadway in a single lane.

Per the plan, $463 million is set to be invested in projects that improve highway safety, efficiency and functionality, including smart technology or adding shoulders. One of the projects would put $68.1 million toward expanding broadband connectivity along I-40 from Flagstaff to the California state line.
Widening projects for I-17 and I-10 are set to advance in the next five years through a partnership between the Department of Transportation and the Maricopa Association of Governments, the regional planning agency that has also committed funds to the projects.
The program also puts $360 million per year toward bridge and roadway preservation throughout the state highway system. The plan includes $445 million over five years for projects that improve highway safety, efficiency and functionality, such as smart technology or addition of shoulders.
The public comment period for the five year construction program began March 18 and ends at 5 p.m. June 2. The State Transportation Board is expected to consider formal action on the program at its June 17 meeting.
