Coronado High School Cancels 2 Football Games, Season Up In Air

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — A Scottsdale high school will be without football for the next two weeks after games were canceled due to a shortage of players.

Coronado High School's next two games have been taken off of the Arizona Interscholastic Association schedule. The Dons were set to play Lakeside's Blue Ridge High School on Friday and Fountain Hills High School the following week. The status of the Oct. 23 game against Chandler Valley Christian remains up in the air, as does the rest of the already shortened season.

Joe Paddock, the assistant executive director for the AIA, told Patch in an email that the team "did not have enough players for at least the next two weeks."

Paddock said the organization received no other information from Coronado regarding why there was a shortage of players.

A spokesperson for the Scottsdale Unified School District did not respond to a request for comment but told the Arizona Republic that the cancellation was due to injuries on the team.

"Due to injuries sustained last Friday night, Coronado High School has made the difficult decision to cancel their next two football games," Amy Bolton, district spokeswoman, told the outlet. "This decision was made in the best interest of the safety of our student-athletes. Coronado plans to return to competitive games as soon possible when the health, wellness and safety of our student athletes permits.”
