You Can Now Apply To Be Scottsdale's Next Poet Laureate

Scottsdale has opened its search for the city's next poet laureate. Applications for the four-year position are open until June 4.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — Do you have a way with words and want to help advance the literary arts in Scottsdale?

If so, then you are invited to apply for the city of Scottsdale's four-year poet laureate program between now and June 4.

The program's perks include a yearly, $1,500 stipend, and the chance to shape the city's future, promoting the art form throughout Scottsdale, the city said.

The four-year poet laureate program is in partnership with Scottsdale Arts and Scottsdale Public Library, and is open to anyone 18 years or older.

The goal of the program is to, "Utilize the power of poetry and language to contribute insight, understanding, and healing to explore issues of equity and inclusion or other issues facing our community," the job posting states.

The next poet laureate must have a demonstrable connection to the city of Scottsdale, and must speak, read and write English, while being able to recognize the diverse languages spoken within the community, the city said.

The laureate term expires on Dec. 31, 2024, reading poetry at ceremonies and literary events that are free and open to the public.
