Is the Local Sky Too Crowded?

Does the midair collision between two planes over the Santa Monica Mountains this week indicate that the sky over Southern California is overcrowded?

Our airspace is among the most crowded in the country, according to a report from NBCLA.

Part of the reason may be the large number of airports in the region, from big ones like LAX to smaller ones like El Monte, the report said.
