2 Killed, 4 Injured In Separate Shootings In Oakland
"It is with great concern that we say that the public can no longer be assured of safety even at large public gatherings."
OAKLAND, CA — Two people were shot and killed in separate shootings in Oakland early Saturday morning, following the Oakland First Fridays festival downtown.
Oakland police are also investigating a separate homicide that was reported on Thursday, according to city data.
The string of shootings Saturday morning began at about 2:15 a.m., when someone reported to 911 dispatchers that a person was shot in the 1900 block of Broadway. Paramedics responded and took the victim to a hospital, where they were in critical condition on Saturday morning, according to the Oakland Police Department.

Just after 3 a.m., police received a notification from a ShotSpotter activation--which is a sensor that detects gunshot acoustics--in the 1700 block of San Pablo Avenue. That alert was followed by multiple calls to the police department reporting a shooting there. The victim was taken to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
About 15 minutes later, police responded to a shooting near 19th Street and Martin Luther King Jr Way. Officers did not initially find a victim at the scene and were told by dispatchers that someone had arrived on their own to a hospital with gunshot wounds. Shortly after, while still investigating the area, they found a person nearby in the 500 block of 18th Street who had been shot.

Paramedics arrived and took the person to a hospital, where they died from their injuries.
Then, at 3:45 a.m., police were notified that two people had arrived at a local hospital with injuries after allegedly being shot in the 1900 block of Martin Luther King Jr Way. Both were in stable condition as of Saturday morning, according to the Oakland Police Department.
The president of the Oakland Police Officers Association, the union that represents Oakland police officers, said in a statement that police staffing was inadequate during large events like the Oakland First Fridays festival.
The free festival takes place the first Friday of each month on Telegraph Avenue from 22nd to 27th Streets. It draws as many as 30,000 people for festivities, music and food, according to the festival's website. Its scheduled hours are 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The police union's president Huy Nguyen said in a statement that the shootings had occurred blocks from the festival in the hours after it ended and said that a sideshow and gathering of dirt bikers in the area added to the chaos of the night.
"Oakland is too violent. There are not enough police to safely patrol the city or major events like First Friday. It is with great concern that we say that the public can no longer be assured of safety even at large public gatherings," Nguyen said in his statement.
In another homicide that was reported by the Oakland Police Department Saturday, a person was arrested Thursday at 2:45 p.m. in the 7800 block of Locust Street on several allegations, including murder and multiple firearm-related charges.
A spokesperson for the Oakland Police Department did not respond to a request for more information about that case on Saturday afternoon.
