Public Schools Hold Kindergarten Open Houses Next Week

Under California's Kindergarten Readiness Act, children must turn 5 years old by Sept. 1, 2014, to enroll for public school kindergarten for the 2014-15 academic year.

From an Alameda Unified School district press release:

Alameda Unified School District’s traditional elementary schools will start their annual “kindergarten round-up” next week, with both standard offerings for interested families and new features aimed at both getting more information out and streamlining the process of getting in.

On Nov. 14, from 7 to 8 pm, all the traditional schools will hold open houses, where parents and guardians can gather with school site administrators and teachers to learn about the programs and activities offered by the school, the school community, opportunities to get involved, the enrollment process, and what a day in the life of a kindergartener is like. (Maya Lin’s open house will be held on Nov. 19, also from 7- 8 pm.)

At this meeting parents and guardians can also pick up a kindergarten enrollment packet and sign up for school tours. Kindergarten tours will be held from Dec. 9 until Dec. 20 and again from Jan.  6 to Jan.  20.

After the tours, parents and guardians can complete an on-line enrollment (see directions at www.alameda.k12.ca.us), as well as make an appointment to go over the enrollment packet. These appointments will take place between Jan. 21 and Feb. 2 at the school district office and will be available from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm.

New this year are the kindergarten “roundtable workshops,” during which parents, guardians, and teachers can discuss topics including kindergarten readiness, transitional kindergarten, immunizations, inter-district transfers, magnet schools, after-school options, and family involvement.

Those workshops will be held Jan. 9 (Otis Elementary School, 6:30-7:30 p.m.); Jan. 15 (Ruby Bridges Elementary School, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.); and Jan. 16 (Lum Elementary School, 6:30-7:30 p.m.).

After Feb. 3, any schools that are over-enrolled for kindergarten will hold random drawings to decide which children will be admitted.
