• Laney women had a locker room intruder. John Beam was their advocate — and now they're at a loss (sfchronicle.com) — Laney College’s women athletes are losing both their longtime advocate, slain athletic director John Beam, and their aquatics program, which has relied on practice time at Encinal High in Alameda after Laney’s pools failed. The district is finally renovating decrepit women’s locker rooms and consolidating colleges, including College of Alameda, but women swimmers and water polo players still face safety worries, lost facilities, and an uncertain future.
   

• NTSB to Investigate Gas Explosion That Destroyed Home, Injured 6 (equipmentworld.com) — A gas-line strike that led to a massive home explosion and six injuries in Alameda County is now under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board. Alameda County Fire Department released doorbell-camera footage of the blast, which destroyed three buildings and damaged others. PG&E crews had isolated the gas line minutes before the explosion, and all injured people are expected to survive.
