Driver Escapes, Passenger Arrested After I-580 Chase

A driver who led police on a chase that began on I-580 managed to escape, though the passenger was arrested.

OAKLAND, CA — A car driving without rear lights on I-580 sped away when police approached and a passenger threw out a gun, the California Highway Patrol said Saturday.

The Honda Odyssey was traveling east on the freeway near Harrison Street when officers attempted to pull it over about 1:19 a.m. Friday, the CHP said on social media.

The vehicle initially yielded but then fled, leading police on a chase tracked by a highway patrol helicopter, the CHP said.

During the pursuit, a loaded Glock handgun was discarded from the passenger side of the vehicle, the CHP said. It was recovered by officers.

The vehicle eventually stopped near Seminary Avenue and Monadnock Way, where both the driver and the passenger fled on foot, the highway patrol said.

The passenger was taken into custody, but the driver escaped.

The passenger was accused of resisting arrest and multiple firearms violations, the CHP said.
