Fun Events Happening At Your Local Library: Alameda

The Alameda Main Library and other East Bay branches are offering some free community-friendly events this weekend.

ALAMEDA, CA — This Saturday, check out the free event happening at your local library:

Alameda Free Library

In celebration of Trans History Month, the Alameda Free Library will be hosting “Trans Film Mini-Fest 2025” featuring films from local transgender filmmakers.

At the event, the filmmakers will “screen their works and chat with audiences about their processes and the importance of film as a medium to bring trans experiences into public awareness,” according to library staff.

The event takes place from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Alameda’s Main Library, in the first-floor Stafford Meeting Room. The library’s address is 1550 Oak St., Alameda.

Other East Bay libraries are also holding free events Saturday:

Fremont Main Library

Herstory Exhibit: The Legal History of Chinese American Women” will be open during Saturday library hours, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (It’s also on-view on subsequent days.)

“From the landmark 1874 Supreme Court case involving Chinese women to today’s generation of judges and elected officials, this exhibit, curated by Dr. Chang Chen, celebrates the everyday individuals who stood up for their rights and, in doing so, helped redefine the American story,” library staff shared.

A “Herstory Reception” gets underway Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Fukaya Room A & B, located on the Fremont Main Library’s first floor.

The library’s address is 2400 Stevenson Blvd., Fremont.

Castro Valley Library

Bob Baker Marionette Theater Performance,” from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., features “a marionette medley unlike any other,” library staff say. “Dozens of sparkling puppets will perform a variety show filled with fan favorite performances sure to bring endless joy.”

Computer Crew: Teen Tech Help” takes place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. “Meet one-on-one with a tutor to get assistance with basic tech issues, such as setting up your email, emailing photos, downloading an app, printing, scanning & more!,” reads the event description.

The Castro Valley Library’s address is 3600 Norbridge Ave., Castro Valley.

Berkeley Public Library

Family Story Time,” featuring fun stories and songs for children and their families, takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The event will be held inside the Central Children's Room on the fourth floor of the Central Branch Library, located at 2090 Kittredge St., Berkeley.

Zine Fest: Art, Comics, Zines and Community” is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Tarea Hall Pittman South Branch.

“Zine enthusiasts, creators, and curious newcomers to immerse themselves in a vibrant atmosphere filled with unique vendors, engaging workshops, and lively music,” stated library staff. “Discover an array of one-of-a-kind zines and indie publications from talented local artists and writers. Support local artists who will have their zines and art for sale.”

The THPS branch is located at 1901 Russell St., Berkeley. The Zine Fest will be held in the branch’s “South Teen” meeting room.

San Leandro Library

Uke Can Do It: A Community Ukulele Jam with Ukulenny” is happening from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the library’s Karp Room.

“All ages are invited to enjoy a free, short, and delightful introductory lesson, followed by live ukulele music and a sweet summery treat,” shared library staff. “Relax and delight in the beauty of the friendliest sounding instrument of all."

The library’s address is 300 Estudillo Ave., San Leandro.
