'A Safe, Nurturing, And Creative Environment': Alameda Hero
We all know someone who's making a difference. Here's one local resident who is having an impact in Alameda.

ALAMEDA, CA — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times.
Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know about these outstanding people and their stories.
This submission comes from Don Hardy who nominated Lorrie Murray of Alameda.

Why do you believe the local hero should be recognized or honored?
Lorrie Murray started Bay Area Music Project 8 years ago to provide after-school music education, academic assistance, and structured play to children in her community. Now, she serves more than 150 kids, grades K-5, at Maya Lin Elementary School and is launching two middle school programs.
Five days a week, 3 hours a day Lorrie and her staff provide a safe, nurturing, and creative environment where student voice is empowered while working collaboratively to make music. Classes are offered in Choir, Violin, Cello, Percussion, and the incredibly innovative SoundLab where students learn to compose music on computers.
No child or family is ever turned away because of financial limitations, so her program offers scholarships to needy families.
Lorrie's students also had the opportunity to perform alongside world-famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Fostering transformative opportunities like this highlights one of the many reasons BAMP was recognized as an Outstanding Organization by California Assemblymember Rob Bonta in 2017.
What's one thing you want everyone to know about the local hero?
Through tireless work, Lorrie has profoundly impacted the future of children in her community.
Thank you for all you do, Lorrie Murray!
