Splooting Squirrel Is Sure Sign Of Spring: Photo Of The Day

Stumpy the squirrel — notice the tail — sought a shady deck in an Alameda backyard to cool off.

ALAMEDA, CA — Steve Gorman has been chronicling the exploits of neighborhood squirrels the past few years, with "Stumpy" being a favorite. Stumpy got its name because of its distinctive tail.

Steve snapped this photo recently of Stumpy splooting on the backyard deck. Steve explains, "Splooting is when an animal lies down on its stomach with its legs spread out to cool down. Squirrels don't sweat so this is a technique they use to cool their body temperature."

Thank you for submitting your photo, Steve.
