Supervisor Wilma Chan Hit By Vehicle In Alameda, Dies
Chan was walking her dog when she was hit.

ALAMEDA, CA — Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan was hit by a vehicle in Alameda Wednesday morning while walking her dog. Hours later, she died at Highland Hospital, according to a statement released by her office.
The crash happened around 8 a.m. on Shoreline Drive. Chan suffered a serious head injury. She died at 2:30 p.m.
"During her 30-year career in public service, Supervisor Chan had been a staunch advocate for children, families, the elderly, affordable housing, and health care for the uninsured," the statement read.

Chan is survived by two children and two grandchildren.
"The family thanks the first responders and medical staff that provided wonderful care to Supervisor Chan, and they request privacy at this time."

Shoreline Drive was closed for hours as an investigation was conducted.
Chan's district includes the cities of Alameda, San Leandro, a portion of Oakland, including Chinatown, Jack London, Fruitvale, San Antonio, Melrose, and Havenscourt neighborhoods. District 3 also includes the unincorporated communities of San Lorenzo, Hayward Acres and a portion of Ashland.
Chan is the second East Bay elected official to die this year after being hit by a vehicle. Dublin Unified School District Trustee Catherine Kuo was killed in March while distributing food at a school. Her husband, William Kuo, replaced her on the school board.
