Updated: Discarded Match Caused House Fire That Killed 3 pets

None of the residents were harmed.

Wednesday, 3:30 p.m. Fire Department spokeswoman Beth Stogner said investigators have determined that a discarded match caused the house fire that led to the deaths of the family's cat and two dogs.

Tuesday, 10:25 a.m. Battalion Chief Mike Lang said the pets involved were two dogs and a cat.

The homeowner had already left to take her children to school when the fire began and a neighbor called in the fire, Lang said.

Witnesses at the scene say the homeowner tried to enter the home to save her pets. She was later reunited with her husband at the scene.

Firefighters still have not determined the cause of the flames.

9:46 a.m. The reported details of a house fire Tuesday morning on East Haven Avenue that resulted in the death of three pets but no other injuries. The full press release is below and attached as a .pdf to the right.

On Tuesday, December 13, 2011, at 7:49 a.m. Arcadia Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 200 block of East Haven Avenue in the City of Arcadia.  Engine 105, Engine 107, Truck 105, Rescue Ambulance 105, Battalion 105, and Monrovia Fire Department Engine 101 and Truck 101 responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters witnessed heavy smoke showing from the attic of a single-story single-family dwelling.  Fire crews immediately began suppression operations, accomplishing knockdown within ten minutes of arrival.  The fire was confined to the area of origin.

The tenants of the involved structure were not at home at the time of the incident; however, the property owner was contacted and responded to the scene.  Also on scene were representatives from Arcadia Police Department, Southern California Edison, The Gas Company and Animal Control.  Three animals were found expired in the home, having succumbed to smoke inhalation.

The fire appears to be accidental in nature and remains under investigation at this time.  Total loss is estimated to be approximately $40,000.  No persons were injured during this incident.

Previously: Units were responding Tuesday morning to a major structure fire at north Second and Haven avenues. Initial reports say a dog was lost in the fire.

Second Avenue is closed between Foothill Boulevard and Colorado boulevards.

The has asked residents to stay away from Second Avenue.
