Baldwin Park No Longer Considering Tax on Sugary Drinks (VIDEO)

The City of Baldwin Park ruled out Wednesday night the possibility to adopt a as a form of relief towards the budget deficit that the city is facing.

After an emergency meeting that was called to discuss the possibility to put such a measure on the ballot, the council members decided to instruct the administration to bring a staff report on other tax measures as a public safety tax or an utility tax.

"As far as the sugar tax [the idea] is dead, but we are going to pursue other things like the public safety tax" said Lozano after the meeting.

"For me as mayor, I personally believe it was a good idea... Unfortunately tonight I lost, the city of Baldwin Park lost."

Baldwin Park was following the steps of El Monte, where the City Council voted recently to approve a soda tax initiative for the November ballot.

A representative from the California Grocers Association used the public communications time to express the opposition to the measure.

Councilwoman Mónica García said she opposed to "the soda tax" idea because they need to be more clear to the residents of what the return of the investment will be.
